When we say we need to work on “loving ourselves,” I think we mean that we need to love the external parts of ourselves, like our looks, our body, our intelligence, or our personality. All of these things are part of the fleeting world or the mind, also known as the ego. So, what we are really saying here is that we need to love our ego.

It’s healthy and helpful to accept the form we incarnated in because this is the hand we were dealt, and it is a gift, regardless of what it looks like! Yes, it’s essential to accept and have compassion for ourselves! Detach from our ego, yes! We get into trouble when we identify too closely with the mind or the body. Many people find their value in their looks or intellect, and when they age, for example, they have a terrible time reconciling that they are not their looks or intellect.

I propose redefining “self-love” as realizing and loving your soul. It’s hard for people to understand how lovely their souls are because many have never met them. Most people go their whole lives thinking that they are their mind. Not so! The mind is a tool, a very powerful tool for you to use when you need it. But don’t be mistaken; you ARE your soul.

What is a soul like?

Glorious. Light. All-Encompassing Unconditional Love. Some would say “God-like.”

How do I recognize my soul?

With a reflection. Look at the perfection of a small child, the trust of your pet, the beauty of the forest, and the love between a mother and her child. Gaze into the eyes of your Soul Partner. Listen for its whisper. Look within yourself, that is where you will find everything that you need.
